AI Isn’t Like a Snow Day

Growing up and going to school in Missouri, known by many on both coasts as a “fly over” state, I got to experience a very unique type of exhilaration. You see, every winter, the white wet stuff would fall from the sky and the kids ALL knew what that meant — SNOW DAY!

Now, there are few feelings in this world that match the excitement of hearing that YOUR school would be closed for the day and YOU could get out there and enjoy the snowy environment.

Yes, snow days in Missouri were GREAT! But what if EVERY day was a snow day? What if you never got back to school? Never picked up your learning? Never progressed any further? Is THAT a good thing too? Would you feel the same way about it after a few days?

Every time Sam Altman from OpenAI opens his mouth about AI–that it’s soon going to be like a “magic genie” that you just rub to get your heart’s desire or that we’ve reached the “singularity” of AI, I just sort of shake my head in disbelief. Also, every time I hear things like that, I see smart, grown adults acting like their elementary school name was just called on the radio—and it’s a snow day—from their work.

But it’s not.

Sam is full of hype and many would say full of crap. So let’s dial it back and pump the brakes on the AI revolution for a sec and see where we really are right now: (these are my opinions of course)

  1. All AI art and graphic design looks like AI art and it looks like crowded, poorly designed garbage. It. All. Looks. The. Same. And why so many words? You don’t have to fill every available space with words, you know?
  2. All AI video looks like AI video and there is just a fakeness about it, you know?  Probably because artificial actually does mean “fake.” Same with AI music — it’s just unnecessary and fake. We have a lot of great music already — don’t need software’s take on love and relationships, you know?
  3. All AI text reads like wikipedia wrote it — it’s boring and awful and almost never gets mad enough to curse. (See, I do).
  4. AI agents (software programs that execute commands) do not really “run” much of anything and certainly not without a TON of human oversight. (As it should be). Lots of companies are lying about this for some reason, but I’ve yet to actually see it work.
  5. AI makes mistakes — all the time. It hallucinates and even protects and defends its errors (which is wildly scary)

So…it’s not a snow day at all.  And even if it was, you wouldn’t want it for the main reason that I cover in my new book “LAIZY A$$ MARKETING” — God created us TO work and human beings derive much of our happiness from that work.

No work = No happiness. And you can’t change it — that is how you were created and it’s really the plan. So is AI just mankind’s latest attempt to supplant God? Hmmm — the really BIG question.

Yes – I believe it is. Man has wanted to replace God since the Garden of Eden and now we’re just more sophisticated about it. Don’t believe me?

Longevity and all of these pills, potions and supplements to add years to your life — Who REALLY decides how long your life is?  Can you really extend it? (Spoiler: No, not one bit. When it’s your time, you’ll have that meeting with God about your potions and supplements)

Robotics — Creating machines in our own image to do our work? Oh yeah, that’s man trying to imitate and replace God. God gave us a bit of creativity kind of like the wizard taught Mickey Mouse a few things in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” (Turns out about as well, too).

And of course, Artificial intelligence itself, which is simply surrounded in hype, lies, BS and broken promises.

And AI feels NOTHING like a real snow day. No matter how far it advances in the future, software code written by humans will NEVER know that incredible, amazing feeling.

(Always written 100 percent by me, never AI — because I am a real writer and do not require AI’s “help”)
