Let’s talk about what has become a huge marketing buzzword — Storytelling. Now, when people tell me they are “good at storytelling” usually it means one of two things — 1) They are good at telling jokes with a story and making people laugh or 2) They are GREAT at talking about themselves in story form. And both of those are fine for general conversation. BUT…when you shift to marketing (persuasive speech) you cannot talk about yourself very much. So STOP doing it. The marketing story must be about THEM, their hero’s journey and how your product or service will GUIDE them to success. Yet, knowing this, all of the storytelling in marketing that I see is focused on companies talking about themselves, their why, their values their purpose. NO. ONE. CARES. Be about them or…stop talking. And that is how you tell a GREAT story. The End.
